How the scam works:

Someone calls and says they’re a deputy, police officer or U.S. Marshal. They say you missed jury duty, there’s a warrant for your arrest, and you have to pay a “fine” or “bond” right now, often with gift cards, a payment app, cash or cryptocurrency. They may already know your name and address. Caller ID may show a real police number. One person said they had a real looking police vehicle sitting outside her house. They may even text or email you an official-looking “warrant.”

If you get a call like this:

• HANG UP. Don’t pay, and don’t give out any personal or bank information.

• Check for yourself: Manatee Clerk Jury Office, 941-749-1800

• Report it: Manatee County Sheriff, 941-747-3011, or Bradenton Police, 941-932-9300

• If you already paid: Call your bank or card company right away, then report it to the Sheriff.
